Through the support of Islington Council’s Community Chest, WeSwim provides disabled Londoners with a safe, welcoming space to enjoy swimming, connect socially, and improve their physical and mental health. Public swim sessions can often feel intimidating for those with disabilities, but WeSwim transforms the experience into one of empowerment and belonging.
On 13th October, WeSwim hosted its inaugural gala at Ironmonger Row Baths, marking an exciting milestone for the organisation and the swimmers it empowers.
The WeSwim Gala is no ordinary swimming event. It embraces the diversity of abilities among participants by focusing on personal achievement rather than speed. Swimmers submit their own target times before the gala, and the races are staggered so that everyone finishes together – an approach that fosters inclusion, support, and camaraderie. The swimmer who comes closest to their target time is crowned the winner.
The day was filled with inspiring moments. Swimmers achieved personal milestones, from swimming longer distances to participating in a gala for the first time. One participant, Edna, shared her pride in overcoming a personal challenge:
“This was the first time I’ve swum without a noodle, and I thought I was going to sink halfway but I just kept going. And then I got a medal. It was amazing, I feel fabulous.” ~ Edna, WeSwim swimmer
The event brought together five WeSwim clubs, creating a sense of friendly competition and community. Volunteers played a vital role, offering one-on-one support, cheering on swimmers, and ensuring the event ran smoothly. Spectators, including friends, family, and even the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Anjna Khurana, joined in the celebration. Presenting medals with enthusiasm and humour, the Mayor said:
“Congratulations to everyone who swam today. You are all amazing, and I’m coming away from here totally inspired by what WeSwim has made happen.” ~ Mayor of Islington, Councillor Anjna Khurana
Natasha (Tasha) Fleming, Director of WeSwim said:
“Working with Islington Council’s Community Chest has been fantastic for our disability swim sessions. Their understanding of local nuances and commitment to building up communities has been invaluable. It takes a village to make these sessions successful, and we’re grateful for their support… At WeSwim, our dedicated team of volunteers provides essential support, fostering social connections and ensuring every swimmer feels welcomed. We have created a swim family that caters to those in need, offering them the chance to enjoy the water. Funding from the Community Chest has been crucial in allowing us to organise these sessions and maintain a robust team of volunteers to support our disabled swimmers.” ~ Tasha Fleming, Director of WeSwim
