At Cripplegate Foundation, we are committed to learning and improving. We regularly seek feedback from organisations that apply to us and those we fund, and we use what we hear to shape how we work. Below are some recent examples of feedback we’ve received, and the changes we’ve made as a result.
Making applications simpler for returning groups
What we heard
Organisations that apply regularly to Islington Council’s Community Chest Fund told us they found it frustrating to complete the full application form every year. Much of the information such as trustee details, addresses and organisational aims stayed the same, yet still had to be re-entered. We learned this at our meetings with applicant groups.
What we changed
We introduced a simplified application form for groups that have applied within the last two years. These organisations now only need to update information if something has changed since their previous application. This more tailored approach has been welcomed by applicants and has helped reduce unnecessary repetition.
Reviewing grant and income thresholds
What we heard
Some organisations raised concerns that the Community Chest grant level (£5,000) and the maximum income threshold for applicants (£100,000) had not changed for several years. A number of groups that had grown beyond the income limit felt they were no longer able to apply, despite continuing to deliver valuable local work.
What we did
Working in partnership with Islington Council, we reviewed both the grant size and the income threshold. As part of this process, we spoke to a wide range of Community Chest applicants. Most felt the existing levels were appropriate, so we decided to keep both the grant amount and the income threshold the same for future rounds.
Making our disability fund more flexible
What we heard
Our disability fund was originally only open to organisations already funded by Cripplegate Foundation or Islington Giving, and groups could apply only once. While this allowed us to make quick decisions, some organisations told us this approach was limiting, particularly when funding supported individuals to attend activities that could not continue once the grant ended.
What we’re changing
As part of our review of the fund, which will be relaunched in 2026, we have agreed that organisations will be able to apply more than once. We will also work with groups to include direct support costs within general funding applications where appropriate. In addition, the fund will be opened to Islington-based organisations that are not currently funded by Cripplegate Foundation or Islington Giving.
