Alderman David Graves is a nominative representative of the Corporation of London, joining the Board of Governors in 2010. David is an advisory member of the Finance & General Purposes Committee.

In early 2019 we spoke with Alderman Graves about his involvement with the Foundation:

What is your role at Cripplegate Foundation and what motivated you to get involved?

I am nominated by the City of London Corporation and my City Ward of Cripplegate (of which I am the Alderman) is next door to Islington. It also gave its name to the Foundation when it was formed more than 500 years ago.

Tell us a bit about your past experience. 

I worked in law as a practitioner and as a Magistrate and saw inequality from close-up. Likewise the contrast between a wealthy and growing City and poorer fringes, including parts of Islington. Helping to continue the 500 year tradition of reducing inequalities was for me a wonderful challenge.

Do you have a favourite project you’ve visited, or a favourite part of Islington or the Cripplegate Ward?

I live in the Barbican and love the concrete grand design but I also love the diversity to be found in Islington in terms of the people and the wonderful landscapes including so many different styles of architecture. There is a great deal to admire.
