Manny Wiafe was born and raised in Islington and continues to live in the borough. He is a solicitor with the international law firm Trowers and Hamlins, and brings in-depth strategy, planning and financial management skills. Growing up in Islington, Manny has participated in local projects including Access to Sports, St Mary’s Neighbourhood Centre and Copenhagen Youth Project. He has a deep connection with the area, local organisations and residents and as such was impressed by the place-based initiatives developed by Cripplegate Foundation, as well as the quality of the organisations it chooses to fund. Manny is motivated to help create consensus on ways to improve social justice for the communities served by the Foundation. This will be Manny’s first trustee or governor’s role.
Jesse Ashman, who has a deep connection to the local area, recently started as the Partnerships Manager and Recovery Worker at the locally based Outside Project and STAR Refuge. The Outside Project is the first LGBTIQA+ identity-responsive homeless shelter, community centre and refuge. In his role as Projects Manager, Jesse manages relationships with grassroots organisations and corporate partners, as well as working directly with refuge guests. Prior to that, Jesse held various roles at Stonewall including Client Account Manager working on their Diversity Champions programme, advising multinational companies on LGBT inclusion, and as a Youth Work Volunteer at Gendered Intelligence. Paul Formosa has lived in Islington all his life and has volunteered, been an activist, and worked in the community for over 20 years. He has been a longstanding Trustee at the learning disabilities charity Centre 404, the Co-ordinator of the Mildmay Community Partnership at its inception, and he currently works at Culpeper Community Garden. He was for a long time a single parent carer to a severely disabled son (who is now an adult), and experienced the financial insecurity, mental ill-health and structural barriers and oppression that come with that for so many people. These experiences are the driving force behind him re-doubling his commitment to standing hand in hand with anyone on the back foot because of who they are or their personal circumstances. Paul also has a PhD, and he was awarded the Pat Haynes Memorial Award for Trustee of the Year in 2019 by Voluntary Action Islington.
Eniola James is a local resident and has been working with Islington Council as a social worker, working with children and families since 2016, and has recently been promoted to Deputy Consultant Social Worker. Eniola also works with Bright Start Islington as a Parent Champion, encouraging more BAME parents to use the service, as she did herself as a local parent. Eniola’s previous roles included working as a Greenwich Council Support Worker for adults with learning disabilities, and as a Manager at a Children’s Contact Centre in Greenwich. Eniola’s work as a children and family social worker has given her a wider understanding of the challenges and resilience of the local community, and the range of services available to provide support. Eniola has built an online presence where she speaks with new mothers from ethnic minority backgrounds, addressing issues such as identity amongst BAME children, post-natal depression and barriers to accessing services.
