Cripplegate Foundation works to bring about change that will improve the lives of Islington’s most disadvantaged residents. Our vision is of a society where everyone in Islington has the opportunity to live a rewarding life free from poverty and inequality.
As such, we are incredibly concerned that the Government is planning to cut payments for those most in need, by withdrawing the £20 a week uplift for families on Universal Credit. As highlighted in an open letter to the Prime Minister this week, a cut of £20 a week to Universal Credit and Working Tax Credit, scheduled for 6 October 2021, will mean the biggest overnight cut to the basic rate of social security since the modern welfare state began, more than 70 years ago.
Recently released Department for Education figures show a 17% increase in children eligible for free school meals in the borough since March 2020 and, with almost 50% of primary school children in Islington already living in poverty, the cuts to Universal Credit are hugely worrying. Growing up in poverty can make children’s lives harder well into adulthood, reducing access to opportunities. We have been working in partnership with Islington Council since 2014 to support people in Islington facing hardship through the Resident Support Scheme (RSS). The RSS provides vital financial support for local people who are in crisis, or who need support with housing and council tax costs.
The latest independent analysis from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) shows this cut risks plunging 500,000 people into poverty, including 200,000 children.
As a member of 4in101, Cripplegate Foundation is supportive of the open letter and its request to the Prime Minister on 2nd September 2021 by 4in10, Joseph Rowntree Foundation and over 100 frontline charities.
